An OTP is a short-lived code that’s used to verify a user’s identity or grant permission for a transaction. When someone tries to log in, pay for something or change their password, the system spits out a random code and sends it to a method the user controls – usually SMS, but it can be text, voice or email too. The user then enters the code back into the app or site and the system checks it matches and hasn’t yet expired. Because each code is only good for one try and only lasts for a short time (say a few minutes), if someone tries to intercept it or uses an old code it won’t do them any good.
