SMS (Short Message Service)

What is SMS

SMS – Short Message Service – is the technology behind the plain text message that lands on your phone without needing an app, a data connection, or even a smartphone. It’s been around since the 1990s, running on the same cellular network that carries your calls, and it still works when everything else – WhatsApp, email, push notifications – doesn’t. Banks use it for OTPs, airlines for boarding alerts, and e-commerce for order updates, because SMS reaches almost every phone on the planet, instantly.

How does SMS work

Every SMS is a short packet of text – up to 160 characters if it’s plain GSM alphabet, or 70 if it has emoji or non-Latin script – that travels over your carrier’s signalling network rather than the data connection your apps use. When you send one, your phone hands it to the nearest cell tower, which routes it to your carrier’s SMSC (Short Message Service Center) – think of it as a post office for texts. The SMSC holds the message, checks where the recipient’s phone actually is on the network right now, and forwards it there; if the phone’s off or out of coverage, the SMSC just holds onto the message and keeps retrying, usually for 24-48 hours, until it gets delivered or expires. Longer messages get split into multiple 160-character segments and stitched back together on the receiving phone, which is why a long text sometimes arrives as a single message and sometimes as three.

How OneXtel helps with SMS

OneXtel runs SMS as one channel on its multichannel CPaaS platform, alongside WhatsApp, Voice (Smart IVR), RCS, email and push – so a message that can’t be delivered on one channel can automatically fall back to another, like switching to SMS when WhatsApp doesn’t land. For India, DLT and TRAI compliance is handled as part of onboarding – your entity, your 6-character Sender ID, and every message template get registered upfront, so texts don’t get blocked at the gateway. You get separate transactional and promotional lanes, per-message delivery reports, and short code or SMPP connectivity for high-volume senders. Need SMS in your own app or workflow instead of a dashboard? OneXtel’s REST API, Aura, lets you send SMS (and other channels) programmatically, with the same DLT compliance and fallback logic built in. OTP delivery is also covered, with automatic fallback to WhatsApp, voice or email if an SMS OTP doesn’t land.

Why it matters

SMS doesn’t need an app, a smartphone, or even internet access to work – just a phone that can receive a signal, which is basically every phone in use. That’s why it’s still the backbone of OTPs, delivery alerts, and account notifications even in a world full of richer chat apps: it reaches people WhatsApp and email can’t, and it does it in seconds. The trade-off is 160 characters and no rich media, so it’s rarely the whole strategy – most businesses use SMS as the reliable fallback and OTP channel, backed by WhatsApp, RCS or voice for anything that needs more than plain text.
