VoIP (Voice API)

What is VoIP

VoIP is the broad idea behind carrying a phone call over the internet instead of a traditional copper phone line – it’s not one product, it’s a whole category. Every call you make on WhatsApp, Zoom, or a SIP-based business line is VoIP: voice over Internet Protocol. Businesses care about it because it decouples calling from phone lines – you get cheaper long-distance rates, calls that work from any internet connection, and voice systems that plug straight into your software instead of routing through a phone company’s switchboard.

How does VoIP work

A traditional phone call is circuit-switched – it reserves a dedicated line between two points for the whole call, the way landlines have worked for a century. VoIP is packet-switched instead: your voice gets picked up by a mic, digitized, compressed by a codec (G.711 and Opus are common ones – Opus handles bad networks better, G.711 gives cleaner quality on good ones), and chopped into small data packets. Those packets travel over the internet like any other data, get reassembled in the right order at the other end, and converted back into sound – all within a few hundred milliseconds if things are working right. Setting up and tearing down that call – dialling, ringing, hanging up – is usually handled by a signalling protocol called SIP. SIP Calling and SIP Trunking, which OneXtel’s glossary covers separately, are specific ways businesses implement VoIP on top of that signalling layer – this entry is about the umbrella technology itself.

How OneXtel helps with VoIP

OneXtel doesn’t hand you a WebRTC SDK to build your own softphone from scratch – what you get is Smart IVR, OneXtel’s VoIP and SIP-based voice infrastructure, ready to plug into. Instead of running your own telephony stack, you use it to build IVR call flows, route inbound and outbound calls, and deliver OTPs by voice call when SMS or WhatsApp isn’t getting through – all through the Aura REST API, documented at docs.onextel.com. Because voice is one channel on OneXtel’s multichannel CPaaS platform alongside SMS, WhatsApp Business API, RCS, email and push, a call can sit inside the same fallback logic as your other channels – so an OTP call or an IVR notification isn’t a separate system bolted on, it’s part of the same customer communication setup you’re already running.

Why it matters

VoIP matters because it changed voice from a fixed-cost utility into something you can build on. A call centre that would’ve needed physical phone lines for every agent can now run on internet connections and scale up or down with demand. Cross-border calling stops being an expensive per-minute line item. And because voice becomes just another thing your software can trigger – an API call, not a phone-company request form – it fits into automated flows like OTP verification, delivery call-outs, and IVR support menus. For a business picking voice infrastructure, the real question usually isn’t “VoIP or not” anymore – almost everything is VoIP now – it’s whether the specific implementation (SIP trunk, hosted IVR, a calling API) is reliable, well-routed, and easy to build on.
