SIP Trunking

What is SIP trunking

SIP trunking is basically a virtual phone line – it connects your business phone system (your PBX) to the public telephone network over the internet, instead of through those old physical PRI or E1 lines running into your office. Your calls travel as data over your internet connection, get handed off to the public network by your provider, and reach whoever you’re calling – no copper wiring or on-site hardware sprawl needed. It’s the connection layer quietly running underneath a lot of modern business calling.

How does SIP trunking work

Instead of buying a fixed set of physical phone lines, you connect your PBX to a SIP trunking provider over the internet using the SIP protocol. The provider’s network then carries your calls to and from the regular phone network (PSTN) or mobile numbers on the other end. Capacity here is measured in “channels” – one channel per simultaneous call – and you can scale that up or down on demand, so you’re not stuck paying for lines you don’t need. In India, your provider also handles number allocation and porting for you, and every call has to follow TRAI/DLT rules around caller ID, so the compliance side is baked in rather than something you bolt on yourself. Say a call center is drowning in physical PRI lines – swapping to SIP trunks lets them add or drop channels as call volume shifts, no rewiring required. Or picture a retailer bracing for a festive sale weekend – they just scale up channels for the weekend and scale back down after, paying only for what they actually used.

How OneXtel helps with SIP trunking

OneXtel’s Voice/IVR line – Smart IVR – runs on exactly this kind of connectivity underneath it, so when you set up voice or IVR flows with OneXtel, SIP trunking is the plumbing making those calls actually happen. Think of a bank that wants two branch PBXs linked to one shared trunk, tied into a cloud IVR that routes calls intelligently – that’s the kind of setup this connectivity layer supports. And because OneXtel runs SMS, WhatsApp, Voice/IVR, RCS, Email and Push on one multichannel platform, your voice channel isn’t sitting in isolation – it works alongside every other way you reach customers, with DLT/TRAI compliance built in for the India market throughout.

Why it matters

SIP trunking gets rid of the physical-line headache, scales with you instead of boxing you in, and keeps your compliance sorted automatically for Indian regulations. Whether you’re a call center ditching PRI lines, a retailer prepping for a traffic spike, or a bank linking branches to one shared cloud IVR, it’s the flexible backbone making your voice calling actually work – without you having to think about the wiring. Just don’t mix it up with “SIP calling,” which is a different thing entirely – trunking is about the connection itself, not the calling feature sitting on top of it.
