What is Text to Speech (TTS)

Text to speech (TTS) is technology that turns written text into spoken audio – feed it a sentence and you get back a voice reading it aloud, no human narrator required. It’s what makes your phone read a message out loud, a GPS app call out the next turn, or an automated call read out an order number instead of playing a pre-recorded file. The output isn’t a recording of someone talking – it’s synthesized on the spot from whatever text you give it.

How does Text to Speech work

A TTS engine breaks down text in two stages – first it works out how the words should sound (converting numbers, abbreviations and punctuation into something pronounceable, then mapping that onto phonemes, the individual sound units of speech), then it generates the actual audio waveform from those phonemes. Older systems stitched together tiny snippets of pre-recorded human speech to build sentences, which is why they sounded robotic and a bit clunky. Modern TTS uses neural networks trained on hours of real speech, so the output carries natural rhythm, intonation and pauses instead of a flat, mechanical tone. Feed it “Your OTP is 4521” and it works out that’s four-five-two-one, not four thousand five hundred twenty-one, and reads it back accordingly. This is exactly what powers an IVR call reading out a dynamic message – an account balance, a delivery ETA, a one-time code – generated fresh each time instead of needing a human to have pre-recorded every possible version of that sentence.

How OneXtel helps with Text to Speech

OneXtel doesn’t build or sell a standalone TTS engine – where it comes in is inside Smart IVR, OneXtel’s Voice/IVR product line built on SIP. Smart IVR can read out dynamic, text-driven messages during a call instead of relying only on pre-recorded audio clips for every possible thing a customer might need to hear – think an OTP, an order status, or an account alert read out on the fly rather than requiring a voice artist to record every variation in advance. And because Voice/IVR is one channel on OneXtel’s wider multichannel platform, it sits alongside SMS, WhatsApp Business API, RCS, Email and Push Notifications, with the Aura REST API available if you’d rather trigger these voice flows programmatically – so a spoken prompt during a call is just one part of a bigger, connected way of reaching customers.

Why it matters

TTS is the reason a business can read out a personalised message – an OTP, a balance, a delay update – without a human ever recording it, and without maintaining a library of pre-recorded clips for every possible number or name. That matters most in IVR and voice bots, where the content changes call to call and pre-recording every combination just isn’t realistic. It also means updates go out instantly – change the underlying text and the next call reads out the new version, no re-recording required. For any business running voice at volume, that’s the difference between a call centre that can only play fixed messages and one that can actually talk to each customer individually.
