What’s an API Key?
An API key is basically a unique string of characters that lets the API know who’s making a call to it. Think of it as a name tag that also acts as a key – it tells the server “this request is coming from a legitimate account” and basically gives you access to the service. When your app talks to a messaging or voice API, the API key is the proof that it’s allowed to be there, and that gives it access to the service.
How do API Keys Work?
So when you sign up for a platform they give you an API key – and often a secret to go with it. Your app then includes that key in every request it makes – usually by sticking it in the request header. The server gets a look at the key and confirms its valid and active then either does the request or rejects it. The key also makes it easy for the platform to track usage, enforce limits, and make sure that any charges get tied to the right account
