SMS Notifications

What are SMS notifications

SMS notifications are the short text alerts a business sends the moment something worth telling you happens – your OTP landing right after you hit “send,” a courier update the second your order ships, or a reminder an hour before your appointment. They travel over the regular telecom SMS network, not the internet, so they land on any phone, smartphone or not, and usually within seconds. No app, no login, no Wi-Fi needed – just a message sitting in your inbox.

How do SMS notifications work

Every SMS notification starts with a trigger somewhere in a business’s system – a customer completes checkout, an OTP gets requested, an appointment slot is booked, a delivery driver marks a parcel out for delivery. That event fires an API call to an SMS gateway, which slots the message into a queue, checks it against a registered template, and pushes it out over an SMSC to the customer’s number – typically in under 10 seconds for transactional traffic. This is the key split: transactional notifications (OTPs, order updates, payment confirmations, appointment reminders) are triggered by something the customer already did or asked for, so in India they’re allowed to bypass DND restrictions and reach even numbers registered as do-not-disturb. Promotional notifications – sales, discount codes, “act now” nudges – are opt-in only and blocked on DND numbers. Because the message rides the telecom SMS network rather than data, it doesn’t need an app open, background data, or even a smartphone to arrive.

How OneXtel helps with SMS notifications

OneXtel sends SMS notifications through its bulk SMS setup, with DLT/TRAI entity registration, a 6-character Sender ID, and template registration handled during onboarding – so an OTP, order update, or appointment reminder goes out on a proper transactional route that gets through even on DND numbers. Developers wire trigger events (order placed, OTP requested, slot booked) into the flow through Aura, OneXtel’s REST API documented at docs.onextel.com, so the SMS fires the moment the event happens in your system. High-volume senders connect via short code or SMPP, and every message comes back with a per-message delivery report. For OTPs specifically, OneXtel’s OTP & Authentication solution sends the same code over SMS, WhatsApp, voice, or email with automatic channel fallback if one doesn’t land. And since SMS, WhatsApp, RCS, voice, email, and push all sit on the same platform, a notification isn’t stuck on one channel if that channel fails.

Why it matters

SMS notifications matter because they don’t ask for permission first – no app install, no notification settings to enable, just a message that lands on whatever phone the customer already has, smartphone or basic. That’s why OTPs still travel by SMS even in an app-first world: it’s the one channel guaranteed to reach almost anyone within seconds. For a business, that reliability translates into fewer “where’s my order” calls, fewer missed appointments, fewer failed logins – because the update reached the customer before they had to ask. And when a notification is time-sensitive, like a payment confirmation or a delivery attempt, SMS’s near-instant delivery is what makes the difference between a customer who trusts the process and one who doesn’t.
