What is an App Notification?
An app notification is one of those little messages that pops up from an app – the alert on your lock screen, the badge on the icon, or that banner that slides in while you’re in something else. Unlike text messages which go over the mobile network, app notifications come directly from the app itself and your phone’s notification system.
How do App Notifications work?
When you first install an app & agree to let it send you notifications, it registers your phone with that notification service (like Firebase for Android or the one Apple uses on their devices) and gets back a special ID for your device. Then, when the company wants to send you something – say, a notification that your order’s been updated, or a reminder about something – their server sends the message along with that ID to the notification service. They then deliver the notification to your phone. You can schedule these for later or send them to a whole bunch of people at once.
