SMS Gateway

What is an SMS Gateway

An SMS gateway is the system that lets your app, website or platform actually send and receive text messages – it’s the bridge between your software and the mobile networks that deliver SMS to a phone. Instead of a person tapping out messages one at a time, your business connects to a gateway through a web dashboard, an API, or a direct network connection, and it does the sending (and receiving) for you – whether that’s one OTP or a few lakh order updates in one go.

How does an SMS Gateway work

At its core, an SMS gateway sits between your application and the mobile carriers that actually deliver a text to a phone. You send it a message – through a web platform, a REST API, or a direct connection like SMPP – and the gateway converts that into the right format and hands it to the carrier’s SMSC (the system that routes SMS traffic) to reach the recipient’s number. In India, that handoff also has to clear DLT: your business entity, Sender ID, and exact message template need to be registered with the telecom regulator, or there’s no approved template for the gateway to send under. It works in reverse too, picking up replies and inbound messages and routing them back to your system. For smaller volumes, a web dashboard or simple HTTP API is enough; once you’re sending thousands or millions of messages, you’ll usually move to a short code or SMPP connection so the gateway can handle that scale, with delivery reports coming back on every message sent.

How OneXtel helps with SMS Gateway access

OneXtel’s platform is the SMS gateway – you’re not choosing a separate gateway and bolting OneXtel on top of it. You get a web platform and a REST API (Aura, documented at docs.onextel.com) to send messages straight from your own systems, plus short code and SMPP connectivity for high-throughput sending. DLT/TRAI compliance is handled as part of onboarding – your entity, Sender ID, and templates get registered so messages actually clear the gateway instead of getting blocked, and both transactional and promotional lanes are supported with per-message delivery reports. And because SMS is just one channel on OneXtel’s multichannel platform – alongside WhatsApp, Voice/IVR, RCS, email and push – a message can automatically fall back to another channel when SMS alone isn’t the best route to your customer.

Why it matters

Every text message a business sends – an OTP, a delivery update, a promo blast – moves through an SMS gateway, so how reliable and compliant that gateway is decides whether your message actually reaches the customer. In India especially, a gateway is only as good as its DLT setup – the fastest connection in the world still won’t deliver a message sitting behind an unregistered template. Picking a gateway isn’t just about sending volume either; it’s about getting delivery reports you can trust, having both transactional and promotional lanes handled correctly, and not being stuck on SMS alone when a customer would be better reached on WhatsApp, voice, or another channel entirely.
