SMS Aggregator

What is an SMS Aggregator

An SMS aggregator is the company that sits between your business and the mobile networks – Airtel, Jio, Vi and the rest – so you never have to strike a deal with each carrier just to send a text. You connect to the aggregator through an API, an SMPP link or a web platform, hand over your message and number list, and the aggregator routes it onto the right operator’s network so it lands on the phone in your customer’s pocket, usually within seconds.

How does an SMS Aggregator work

Think of an aggregator as the middleman with the direct lines. A Tier 1 aggregator has its own SMPP binds straight into the mobile operators’ networks; a Tier 2 aggregator buys capacity from a Tier 1 and resells it, which usually means an extra hop and a bit more latency. When you fire off a message through an aggregator’s API, it doesn’t just blast it down the cheapest route – a good one routes for quality, checking which path is actually delivering and not getting silently dropped or flagged as spam. In India this comes with real regulatory weight: the aggregator (or the telemarketer entity behind it) has to be registered with the DLT platform under TRAI, along with your business entity, your Sender ID, and the exact template of every message you plan to send. Only messages matching an approved template get forwarded to the carrier – anything else gets blocked before it leaves the aggregator. Delivery reports then flow back up the same chain, so you know what reached the handset and what didn’t.

How OneXtel helps with SMS Aggregation

OneXtel doesn’t just help you find an aggregator – it is one. We hold the carrier connections directly, so when you send through OneXtel, your message isn’t bouncing through a chain of resold hops before it reaches Airtel, Jio or Vi. DLT compliance is handled as part of onboarding: your entity, your 6-character Sender ID and every message template get registered before you send a single text, across both transactional and promotional lanes. You get per-message delivery reports, short code and SMPP connectivity for high-throughput sending, and Aura, our REST API, if you’d rather wire SMS straight into your own systems. Because SMS sits on the same platform as WhatsApp, Voice, RCS, email and push, OneXtel can fall back to another channel automatically – useful for OTPs and alerts where a message absolutely has to land.

Why it matters

Without an aggregator, reaching someone by SMS would mean a separate deal with every telecom operator in every circle – simply not realistic for a business that just wants to send OTPs or order updates. Aggregators absorb that complexity into one connection, one API, one dashboard. But not all aggregators are equal – a Tier 1 with direct operator connects and clean DLT compliance delivers reliably, while a poorly resold chain means dropped messages, spam flags, or texts stuck behind someone else’s traffic. For anything time-sensitive – a login OTP, a delivery alert, a payment confirmation – the aggregator behind your SMS is quietly deciding whether that message reaches the phone in two seconds or not at all.
