What is SMS deliverability
SMS deliverability is simply how many of the texts you send actually land in someone’s inbox instead of vanishing into thin air. Send a lakh OTPs and 96,000 land – that’s your delivery rate, and it’s the number that decides whether your login flow, your shipping alert, or your festive sale blast actually reaches anyone. Miss it, and you’re not just losing a message, you’re losing the customer sitting there waiting on it – which is exactly why every serious SMS platform reports it down to the individual text.
How does SMS deliverability work
Every SMS you send comes back with a delivery receipt (DLR) – a status from the carrier confirming whether that specific message landed, failed, or is still stuck in queue. That single feature is what turns deliverability from a guess into a number you can actually track. A few things push that number down. In India, your message has to match, word for word, the template you registered on the DLT platform – swap a word or drop a variable and the carrier’s system scrubs it before it ever reaches a phone. Your Sender ID matters too – carriers filter messages from unregistered or suspicious IDs, and spammy-looking content (too many links, ALL CAPS, banned keywords) gets flagged the same way. Then there’s DND – promotional SMS gets blocked on any number registered for Do Not Disturb, while transactional messages like OTPs are allowed through regardless. And even a perfectly compliant message can sit in a queue if the carrier’s network is congested or the recipient’s phone is off or out of coverage.
How OneXtel helps with SMS deliverability
OneXtel handles DLT compliance as part of onboarding – your entity, Sender ID and message templates get registered upfront, so you’re not finding out a message got scrubbed after you’ve already sent it. Every message you send through OneXtel comes back with a per-message delivery report, so you can see exactly what landed, what bounced, and why, instead of guessing. Transactional and promotional sends run on separate lanes too, which keeps your OTPs and alerts clear of DND restrictions that apply to promotional SMS. And because SMS is just one channel on OneXtel’s multichannel platform – alongside WhatsApp, Voice/IVR, RCS, Email and Push – a message that fails to deliver over SMS can automatically fall back to WhatsApp or a voice call instead of just sitting undelivered, including for OTPs through OneXtel’s OTP & Authentication solution.
Why it matters
An undelivered OTP means a customer stuck at login. An undelivered alert means a delivery nobody saw coming. SMS deliverability is the difference between a message that quietly does its job and one that just disappears – and unlike email or app push, you often don’t get a second chance to catch someone’s attention. Getting DLT templates, Sender ID and DND rules right isn’t paperwork for its own sake – it’s what actually gets your message through the carrier’s filters. And when SMS alone isn’t enough, having another channel ready to pick up the slack is what keeps a failed delivery from becoming a lost customer.
