What is Bulk SMS
Bulk SMS is exactly what it sounds like – sending a large batch of text messages, from hundreds to millions, in one go instead of typing them out one by one. Businesses do this through an SMS gateway or API rather than a phone, so an e-commerce brand can fire off order updates to lakhs of customers, or a bank can push OTPs to millions of numbers a day, all in a matter of seconds.
How does Bulk SMS work
You connect to an SMS gateway – through an API or a web platform – upload your contact list and message, and the gateway fires it out to every number on that list almost instantly. In India this comes with a catch: DLT registration. You have to register your business entity, your Sender ID (that 6-character name customers see, like OneXtel), and the exact message template with the telecom regulator before you send a single text – only messages that match an approved template actually get delivered. There are two lanes to send in: transactional SMS, for things like OTPs and account alerts, which gets through even to numbers on DND; and promotional SMS, for offers and marketing, which is blocked on DND numbers and restricted to certain hours. Every message you send comes back with a delivery report, so you know what landed and what didn’t – and if you’re sending at serious scale, you’ll usually be routed through a short code or SMPP connection to handle the volume.
How OneXtel helps with Bulk SMS
OneXtel runs bulk SMS as a core part of its CPaaS platform, built for exactly this kind of India-first sending. DLT compliance is baked in – entity, Sender ID and template registration are handled as part of getting you set up, so you’re not sending blind and getting messages blocked at the gateway. You get high-throughput delivery with per-message delivery reports, access through short code or SMPP for heavier volumes, and a REST API (Aura) if you’d rather plug SMS straight into your own systems. And because bulk SMS sits on the same platform as WhatsApp, Voice, RCS, email and push, you’re not locked into SMS alone – OneXtel can fall back to another channel automatically when SMS isn’t the best fit for a particular customer.
Why it matters
Bulk SMS still gets read – fast, and by almost everyone, opted-in app or not. It’s how OTPs reach you in seconds, how a retailer lets its whole loyalty list know about a festive sale in one shot, and how a bank or e-commerce company keeps millions of customers updated without lifting a finger per message. The trade-off is that in India, none of it works without DLT registration done properly – get the template or Sender ID wrong and your message never lands. Used well, though, bulk SMS is still one of the most reliable ways to reach someone directly on their phone, and it works best as one channel in a mix, backed by WhatsApp, voice or email for the moments SMS alone won’t cut it.
