What is a REST API
A REST API is basically a rulebook that lets two systems talk to each other over the internet – your app sends a request, and a server sends back the data or action you asked for. It’s the plumbing behind almost every app you use: when your weather app shows today’s forecast, or a delivery app tells you your order’s two stops away, there’s a REST API quietly fetching that info in the background. REST just means it follows a common set of conventions – so once a developer’s used one REST API, picking up another is pretty quick.
How does a REST API work
Every REST API call has a few moving parts – an endpoint (the URL you’re hitting), a method (GET to fetch something, POST to create something, PUT to update it, DELETE to remove it), some headers (usually carrying your API key, so the server knows it’s really you), and often a body with the actual data, typically in JSON. You send the request, the server processes it, and sends back a status code plus a response – 200 means it worked, 404 means whatever you asked for doesn’t exist, and so on. Each request stands on its own too, since REST APIs are stateless – the server doesn’t need to remember your last call to handle this one, which is exactly why they scale so well.
Take OneXtel’s own Aura API as a real example. To send an SMS, you make a POST request to an endpoint like ctgwapi.onex-aura.com/postsms, with a JSON body carrying the sender ID, the recipient’s number, your message, and the DLT entity/template ID that Indian SMS rules require – authenticated with your onexkey in the header. Send it, and the response confirms whether it landed.
How OneXtel helps with REST API
OneXtel’s Aura API is a REST API purpose-built for sending SMS at scale, with full documentation at docs.onextel.com. DLT/TRAI compliance is baked right into the request format, so you’re not bolting it on separately – just pass the right entity and template ID alongside your sender ID and message, authenticate with your onexkey, and you’re set. Because it’s REST, it plugs straight into whatever stack you’re already running, and it lives on the same OneXtel platform as WhatsApp, Voice/IVR, RCS, email and push – so your SMS sending logic sits right next to every other channel you use to reach customers.
Why it matters
REST APIs are the reason software can talk to other software without someone manually copying data around. They’re predictable, they scale, and once you get how one works, you basically get them all. For a business sending messages at volume, that means less time wrestling with integrations and more time actually reaching customers – whether that’s a single SMS API call or a whole multichannel campaign firing behind the scenes.
