What is an APN really all about?
An APN is a thing on your phone that lets it figure out how to get online using your cellular carrier’s data network. You can think of it as like the phone dialing an internal address to find the internet – without it your mobile data and a bunch of other features that depend on it (like MMS and RCS) will just stop working altogether.
How APNs actually work
Every SIM card/ carrier has its own set of APN settings (which normally get automatically set up when you slap the SIM in your phone). Then your phone uses those settings to find the carrier’s data network, and it’s the network that decides where the internet traffic is sent – to the internet or to services like MMS for example.
