10DLC (10-Digit Long Code)

What is 10DLC

10DLC short for 10-Digit Long Code is the framework US mobile carriers use to vet and register businesses that send application-to-person (A2P) SMS over a regular-looking 10-digit phone number, instead of a short code or toll-free number. Businesses register their brand and messaging campaigns through The Campaign Registry (TCR), and carriers use that registration to assign a trust score that decides how fast and how reliably your messages actually get delivered. It’s the US market’s answer to a problem India solved differently: keeping bulk A2P traffic from drowning in spam filters, without needing a dedicated short code for every use case.

How does 10DLC work

A business or its messaging provider registers with TCR: your company details, an EIN or equivalent, and a description of the specific campaign you’re running, like order confirmations or appointment reminders. TCR checks that against a database of known businesses and assigns a trust score, and separately vets the campaign type marketing, 2FA, account notifications, and so on each have their own registration category. Carriers use that score to set your throughput limit how many messages per minute you’re allowed to send on that number so a well-vetted brand with a clean campaign gets a much higher ceiling than an unregistered or newly-registered one. Send outside your registered category, or without registering at all, and carriers increasingly filter or block the traffic outright, since unregistered 10-digit numbers sending bulk SMS is exactly the pattern spam operations use. It sits below short codes in both cost and throughput, but well above what an unregistered long code can push through today.

How OneXtel helps with 10DLC

10DLC is a US carrier framework, run through TCR it isn’t something OneXtel registers businesses under, and we won’t pretend otherwise, since OneXtel’s compliance stack is built for India, not the US A2P market. What OneXtel does run is the equivalent idea for India: DLT (Distributed Ledger Technology) registration with TRAI, where your business entity, Sender ID and exact message template get registered before a single SMS goes out, and unregistered traffic gets blocked the same way an unregistered 10DLC number would be in the US. That registration happens as part of onboarding on OneXtel’s platform, covers both transactional and promotional lanes, and comes with per-message delivery reports so you can see exactly what cleared and what didn’t the same trust-and-throughput problem 10DLC solves in the US, solved for the Indian market instead.

Why it matters

If you’re sending SMS into the US market, 10DLC registration isn’t optional anymore carriers actively throttle and filter unregistered long-code traffic, so skipping it means messages that silently never arrive, not just slower ones. The registration category you pick matters too: a 2FA or account-notification campaign gets treated very differently than a marketing blast, and mismatching the two is a common way messages get flagged. For a business operating in India instead, the lesson carries over even though the system doesn’t: DLT registration plays the same role TCR does in the US, and skipping it produces the identical failure mode. Wherever you’re sending from, the underlying rule holds: carriers reward registered, well-categorized senders with reliable delivery, and quietly punish everyone else.
